Baby Boomers to Gen Alpha: Setting Ourselves Up for Success.
Most workplaces will have five generations all under one roof, with a sixth, Gen Alpha, waiting in the wings. Given how quickly the way people like to work, societal norms, and the world can change in a few years, let alone generations, there’s bound to be some friction found in this disparity. Especially when you’re spending that many hours each day under this roof. But we have to remember, with a bit of attention and care, friction can make fire.
This doesn’t mean MDs and CEOs need to install a skate park and a four-day work week to motivate their employees. Nor does it mean Gen Zers can form a TikTok union whenever they get a telling-off. There is a balance to be had and a superpower of diverse thought that comes with finding it.
So how do we embrace our diverse generations in the workplace to ensure we are set up for success? The first step is understanding the generations. Here are the different traits of each generation. (Don’t worry, we’ve labelled the rough age.)
THINK OPPORTUNITY, NOT CHALLENGE
Communication gaps, differing expectations, and varying comfort levels with technology all present a possibility. It’s all down to the mindset:
