Generational diversity: setting ourselves up for success.
Baby Boomers to Gen Alpha: Setting Ourselves Up for Success.
Most workplaces will have five generations all under one roof, with a sixth, Gen Alpha, waiting in the wings. Given how quickly the way people like to work, societal norms, and the world can change in a few years, let alone generations, there’s bound to be some friction found in this disparity. Especially when you’re spending that many hours each day under this roof. But we have to remember, with a bit of attention and care, friction can make fire.
This doesn’t mean MDs and CEOs need to install a skate park and a four-day work week to motivate their employees. Nor does it mean Gen Zers can form a TikTok union whenever they get a telling-off. There is a balance to be had and a superpower of diverse thought that comes with finding it.
So how do we embrace our diverse generations in the workplace to ensure we are set up for success? The first step is understanding the generations. Here are the different traits of each generation. (Don’t worry, we’ve labelled the rough age.)
- Baby Boomers (age 61–79): Mentorship masters who thrive on creating meaningful relationships.
- Gen X (age 45–60): Independent problem-solvers with a knack for strategic innovation.
- Millennials (age 29–44): Collaborative, purpose-driven, and fluent in digital.
- Gen Z (age 13–28): Tech-savvy, socially conscious, and unafraid to challenge norms.
- Gen Alpha (age 0–12): Future AI natives who will revolutionise how we work and think.
THINK OPPORTUNITY, NOT CHALLENGE
Communication gaps, differing expectations, and varying comfort levels with technology all present a possibility. It’s all down to the mindset:
- Flip the dynamic and make learning a two-way street. Older generations bring experience and expertise, younger generations deliver fresh perspectives and digital fluency.
- Create psychological safety. Empathy is the glue that holds us together. By fostering trust and understanding, we create an environment where ideas flow freely.
- Build diverse teams. Generational diversity adds a layer of intellectual richness to any project. Mixing perspectives isn’t just a nice-to-have—it’s a competitive edge.
